Thoughts on the wisdom of children

The Small Daughter is 6. The Big Daughter is 15. Both have taught me many. many things. They are beautiful souls and I am grateful every day for them. I hope I can teach them half of what they have taught me.

The Small Daughter and I were discussing The Man. The Man is a friend who has become more than that. The relationship was surprising and is amazing to me. It is precious and to be savoured and enjoyed. The Small Daughter and I were having a chat about how she likes The Man. I asked her what she liked best. This was her reply.

‘I like best mammy how happy he makes you. You always like it when things make me happy, and I like it when you are happy too.’

I thought that was incredibly insightful for a 6 year old. And generous in spirit. The Small Daughter is very like this. All children are. Things are more simple to them. If we listen to them more and actually hear what they have to say, we could learn some things. If we encourage and allow this part of them, they can keep that stuff they just know.

Of course, chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner, will make you sick so that’s, I guess, where the parental wisdom must kick in.

Things I am grateful for today:

1. The Small Daughter

2. The Big Daughter.

3. The Man.

  2. I learn a lot from them when I remember to stop and listen Our lives can be so busy and we can get distracted by trying to get them to do all the things we need them to do as we go about our business. We can forget how much they have to give us.
